How to Read CRS/GDS Codes

Holiday House utilizes an industry standard vehicle chart to define groups. This easy to use chart consists of 4 categories. Each position in the 4-character vehicle code represents a definable characteristic of the vehicle. Car codes are created by selecting 1 character of each column and combining them into a 4-character car code. (Example:CDAR = Compact car/4 door/automatic transmission/air conditioned.)

  • For third party liability? (This is if you hit another car, person, or public property - even if it wasn't your fault)
  • Car theft? Even when you cannot provide the keys?
  • Your rental vehicle for damage?
  • Up to what amounts for each of the above?
  • All deductable amounts, or do you have to pay the first XXX?
  • All potential increases in premium? (ie. if you are involved in an incident, will your own insurance premiums go up?)
  • All rental durations, or is there a time limit? (some cover only up to 3 week rental)
  • All types of rental vehicles, or only up to the value of the car you own?
  • The rental vehicle even if your own car at home is being driven?
  • Provisions for uninsured motorists? (Florida residents are not required to have car insurance like we are in Canada)
  • The handling of all claims and paper work, or do you have to pay the car rental company to make a claim? If so, how long do you have to wait for refund?

Insurance Definitions

The following is the most commonly-used wording by car rental suppliers in describing various types of coverages. We provide a definition for the types of coverages along with issues you'll need to consider before making a booking.

INSURANCE TYPE COVERAGE   ISSUES

Third Party Liability/Public Liability -
The renter damages: another car, including occupants, public property (i.e. telephone pole,) person, (i.e. pedestrian, bicyclist).

Concern: The renter will be held financially responsible for any third party damage beyond the coverage included.

Notes: Most drivers in Canada carry a minimum of $1 million Third Party Coverage.
Does NOT cover damage to the rental vehicle.
Florida residents are NOT required to have this coverage.
Extent of Coverage: Will vary by Country, USA states, rental supplier and rental plans purchased.

Primary: First claim is made against the car rental plan to the extent of the coverage included.

Secondary: First claim is made against the renter's own insurance policy.

Extended Protection, or Additional Liability Insurance:
Increases the amount of Third Party/Public Liability coverage offered by the rental company.
  Extent of Coverage:
$1 million USD of primary coverage.

Collision Damage Waiver or Loss Damage Waiver -
The renter damages: the rental car, or in the USA, the car is stolen anytime during the period of the entire rental agreement.
The renter is financially responsible for the total cost of repairs and/or vehicle replacement if CDW/LDW is declined regardless of fault.

Note: Neither CDW nor LDW is technically insurance, these are coverages offered by the rental company.
CDW/LDW may be voided by the car rental company under certain circumstances including impaired driving, reckless driving and the operation of the vehicle by an unauthorized driver. An unauthorized driver is one who is NOT registered on the rental agreement. Spouses are not automatically eligible to drive the vehicle. All drivers must be registered on the rental agreement
  Plan Purchased:
  • Basic: no coverage
  • CDW Inclusive: included
  • Liability Inclusive: no coverage
  • Fully/Carefree Inclusive: included

  • Exclusions: coverage may exclude damage to tires or glass.

Credit card coverage: Some credit card companies include CDW coverage if the renter uses his/her card (either as payment or security deposit). The car rental company will hold the renter responsible for any loss/damage caused to the vehicle and the renter must make a claim from the credit card company. Clients must verify the coverage offered through their credit card company.

Travel Insurance: Some of the travel insurance policies offer CDW coverage. This coverage is not recognized by car rental companies and the renter will be held responsible for any damage caused to the rental vehicle. The renter must make a claim from the insurance company.

Theft Protection: An optional coverage that protects the renter for the financial replacement of the vehicle.

Concern: If the renter declines TP, they are liabable for the full replacement cost of the vehicle regardless of circumstances.
      Plan Purchased:
  • Basic: no coverage
  • Liability Inclusive: no coverage
  • Fully/Carefree Inclusive: included

  • Note: Some companies require the renter to purchase CDW for the Theft Protection to apply.

    Personal Accident Insurance (PAI):
The renter: Accidental death, dismemberment or loss of sight coverage for the primary renter during the entire renatl period. Also covers passengers while in the vehicle, usually for lesser amounts.
PAI also includes an allowance for emergency medical treatment.
Extent of Coverage: Varies by car supplier for both injury and death.

Note: Offered as an option to renter at time of rental, but most often declined as people tend to have their travel insurance to cover for such incidents.

    Personal Effects Coverage, or
    Personal Effects Protection (PEC/PEP):

Cover personal effects (ie: luggage) which protects the primary renter and his/her immediate family members plus any other authorized driver from loss or damage to personal belongings while they are in the rental vehicle as caused by fire, theft, lighting or accident.
Extent of Coverage: Varies by car supplier.

Deductable: Amount for which the renter is financially responsible. This amount will vary by itme and supplier.

Note: Certain items such as camera equipment, jewelry, traveler cheques and currency NOT covered.
